Relax, there’s no need to worry. Completing end-of-year tasks, delivering performance reviews to your team, and crafting meaningful, effective goals for the coming year can indeed be challenging. Additionally, breaking down your primary objective (like expanding the business or increasing revenue) into attainable steps might seem daunting, whether it’s for you or your staff.

Thankfully, technology is here to assist. In this guide, I’ll show you precisely how to leverage ChatGPT to establish significant and impactful objectives for both yourself and your business.

Step 1: Simply Inquire

Numerous companies are eager to provide you with solutions for “prompt engineering,” and while some may be beneficial, often, the best approach is to directly ask what you wish to understand.

In managing my business, I crafted a basic prompt (refer to Step 2) using ChatGPT 3.5. I opted for 3.5 as it’s accessible at no cost — and I found that the outcomes were comparable to those in version 4.0.

Step 2: Describe Yourself to ChatGPT

Here’s what I conveyed to ChatGPT:

“I aim to establish professional objectives for myself in 2024. Here’s a brief introduction.

“I’m a solopreneur dedicated to enhancing HR practices. My approach is threefold: I write about HR and employment law for various clients, lead webinars primarily on U.S. compliance and integrating AI in HR, and deliver keynote speeches. I also maintain a robust social media presence, with 44,000 LinkedIn followers, 32,000 on Facebook, and 12,000 newsletter subscribers. Could you suggest five goals to help boost my revenue next year?”

The response was prompt and offered these suggestions:

Expand Your Client Base

Set a goal to acquire a certain number of new clients or projects in 2024, across your writing, webinars, or speaking engagements.
Seek out new markets or sectors that could benefit from your HR expertise and customize your offerings accordingly.

Diversify Income Streams

Consider introducing new HR-related services or products to generate additional revenue.
Explore passive income avenues, like creating and selling HR resources or templates online.

Enhance Your Online Presence

Set a target to grow your social media following and engagement by a specified percentage. Establish concrete goals for LinkedIn, Facebook, and other pertinent platforms.
Consistently post valuable content, interact with your audience, and partner with HR influencers or experts to elevate your online profile.

Monetize Your Newsletter

Utilize your 12,000 subscribers by providing premium content or special deals to monetize your email list.
Develop a plan to expand your subscriber base using lead magnets, guest posts, or strategic collaborations.

Raise Your Speaking Fees

Review and aim to increase your current speaking fees in 2024.
Seek out prominent speaking opportunities at major events and conferences to position yourself as a leading voice in HR.

Initially, the advice seemed overly simplistic, like suggesting I “raise my rates” to increase earnings. It might seem obvious, but I decided to continue exploring.

Step 3: Initiate Additional Queries

Keep in mind that engaging with ChatGPT is similar to having a conversation with a person. Therefore, to receive more detailed and accurate responses, don’t hesitate to pose further questions. Here’s the approach I took:

Step 4: Keep asking

And now, I’ll ask it to give me specific steps to do this.

Step 5: Persist until you’ve acquired all the necessary details.

This procedure can be smoothly navigated for any objectives you wish to define — whether personal, for your enterprise, or your staff. Engage freely with ChatGPT. It can illuminate aspects you might otherwise overlook.

Consider these suggestions to initiate your conversation:

1. Enter an employee’s performance evaluation, then inquire with ChatGPT, “Could you provide four SMART objectives for this individual?” Remember, exclude the employee’s name to maintain privacy and minimize bias, as names can reflect various personal attributes.

2. If your company operates in a specific field with a certain team size and you’re looking to grow into a new market, pose the question: “My enterprise operates in sector X with Y employees. I’m aiming to venture into market Z. What are three strategies you’d recommend for this expansion?”

3. To boost your earnings by 10 percent, especially after unsuccessful attempts with strategies X, Y, and Z, ask: “What are three new approaches I could employ to achieve a 10 percent increase in revenue?”

Experiment with different prompts! Naturally, ensure you keep any confidential details away from ChatGPT. Generally, goals aren’t unique or secretive, so feel free to explore. This should set you on a positive path for 2024.
